Carsten played SUPER LEAGUE!

Carsten played super league baseball for the Raptures.
This team had some pretty sweet uniforms, but that was about it!  We didn't know what we were in for when we joined this team.  It was a learning experience for sure!  We met some cute kids and nice parents, but the skill level was… well, lacking to say the least. And unfortunately, the coaching was even worse!  I learned to stand next to the dugout so that my presence could be felt.  The coach was very negative and belittling to the kids, especially to his own son.  None of the parents seemed to want to stand up to him, so I took it upon myself to be "That Parent" for the sake of the kids.

Carsten was quickly one of the team standouts!
In comparison to the other boys, Carsten could do it all!
He caught, he pitched, he hit, he could really play whatever position he wanted!  So in that regard it was a great year. However, in every other aspect it was hard to watch!

Carsten loves to play baseball!
When you play super league, you get to play a lot of baseball!
So Carsten was one happy boy!

The Purple Pixies!

Reagan played soccer with a
Freedom Elementary team named
The Purple Pixies!

I've never seen a girl have so much fun being silly!
This was the first time Reagan played on a team with girls she went to school with.  Maybe that's why she had so much fun!  Coach Allred said that Reagan was always happy and positive and did a really good job of putting all the girls in a good mood.  That's my girl!

Reagan played all the positions besides goal keeper.
She played a lot of mid field but toward the end of the season they started putting her in on defense more.  They found that the other teams had a hard time scoring if Reagan was defending the goal.

The girls had a good season!
They didn't technically keep score but they were still always winners to us!

At the end of the season Coach Allred got each
of the girls little soccer trophies.
 Reagan thought it was AWESOME!

Way to go PIXIES!

Dance Festival 2013

We love the dance festival!

Reagan was as cute as ever dancing with the 3rd graders.

But who really stole the show was one of the 3rd grade teachers Mr. C!
Toward the end of the 3rd grade dance all the kids hit the floor and then Mr. C came out from nowhere and put on the best Gangnam Style dance you've ever seen!  The crowd went wild!

Carsten performed with all the 5th graders.

They danced to Cotton Eyed Joe!

Every year we look forward to the dance festival and every year it doesn't disappoint.  It's so much fun seeing what the kids have learned, watching them have fun, and seeing them (and the teachers) let loose!

Talan's turn can't come fast enough!

During baseball season we drag Talan from one baseball game to another.  None of them his own!
Between Bradon and Carsten's games alone, we are talking roughly 12 games a week!
One of the down sides to being child #5 is that mom and dad aren't super excited about signing you up to be on a team of your your very own at age 5.  You see, they are super busy with #1's football practices and weights, #2's baseball practices and games, #3's baseball practices and games, and #4's soccer practices, games and piano lessons.  Not to mention school activities and mutual.  Needless to say, #5 doesn't get to start playing organized sports at age 3 like the rest of them.  #5 gets to wait until kindergarten.  Assuming that #1 will have a drivers license by then!  You get the drift!

Well, Talan can hardly wait until it's his turn!

He was bent out of shape that he didn't have a pair of cleats.  Everyone else has a pair of cleats!  So we took a trip to Deseret Industries and luckily found a nice pair of cleats for Talan.  He was then bent out of shape that he didn't have a bat bag.  Bradon and Carsten have bat bags!  Luckily Carsten's team got new team bags and so Carsten's last years bag was available!  Then he needed stuff to put in his bat bag!  Luckily we've been at this baseball thing for a few years now so we had plenty of extra things to go around.  It got to where we made sure to bring Talan's bat bag to all the games.  He would suit up and head to the field.  The funny thing was that he would always seem to find kids to play with.  If there was ever an empty field, we would find Talan with a bunch of straggling kids playing a little pick up game.  Or they would just be off to the side playing!  Obviously he's not the only child #5 in these parts!

She's NINE and feeling FINE!

This year Reagan turned 9 years old!

She has now reached an age where she can plan her own parties!  It was really quite nice!  We went to the store and she picked out what she wanted.  She knew what she wanted to do, who she wanted to invite and what they were all going to wear!

They all came dressed in pajamas bringing their favorite stuffed animal.  They played games that Reagan made up, and they all seemed to have a really good time!  She's a pretty good little party planner!
After her birthday party, the next several birthday party invitations she received all requested that she come wearing her pajamas.  I told Reagan, "Well look at you, you're quite the trend setter!"  Who knew that pajama party's were all the rage!

And my favorite part to any birthday party!
THE HUGS!

I think it makes each girl feel special!

And it reminds my Reagan that it's important to be grateful and to show her gratitude!

Happy Birthday Reagan Girl!

A few GREAT pictures!

There is almost nothing more priceless
than pictures of innocence!

Talan is at the perfect age!
He is soaking the world up like a sponge, forming his own opinions, and living the dream!  Being the youngest of 5 must be pretty sweet!
There was this chicken that the kids found walking around.  It was a very tame chicken!  Talan begged to keep it!  I told him that if we kept him, our dog would surely eat him!  We decided to take it down the street to one of the neighbors who had chickens.  I tried to explain to Talan why this was a much superior idea to keeping the chicken.  He was sad!  But he did it anyways.  He walked the chicken down the street and gave it to the neighbors.

Talan is our only child who isn't on a team of his own.  It's sad, but our plate is full, and he has to wait yet one more year to get his own uniform!  We are a very sports minded family.  Our lives are revolved around sports.  We are either practicing a sport, playing a sport, coaching a sport, talking about sports, watching sports on TV, attending a sporting event, or training in one way shape or another so that we can become better at a sport.  There is no wonder why Talan is devastated that he can't be on a team of his own!

But lucky for him we have lots and lots of sporting goods just lying around.  We put together a baseball bag just for Talan.  He has his own cleats, helmet, bat, ball, glove, and catching gear.  As we went to game after game for the older boys, Talan packed his baseball bag and headed out to the game with us.  He has never been very shy and he's pretty convinced that he can do anything that his older brothers can do if not better!  He always seemed to find kids to play with.  If there was an empty baseball field, he along with a herd of other little kids would be playing a little pick up game on it!  If they couldn't find a field, they always seemed to find a small patch of grass somewhere to play.  This Talan is a serious gamer!

St. Patrick's Day!

This last year St. Patrick's Day fell on a Sunday.
So I cooked up a GREEN Sunday dinner!
The only thing that wasn't green was the pork roast.
But how do you color a pork roast green?

We had  GREEN mashed potatoes,
GREEN gravy,
GREEN peas,
GREEN rolls,
GREEN jello,
GREEN pistachio and marshmallow salad,
and GREEN kool-aid!

It tasted just like any other Sunday dinner, but for some reason it was a little harder to swallow!  Unless your eyes were closed of course!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Funny Cake!

Every now and then I get asked to decorate a cake for someone.  Blyden is the manager of the gas station/drink store I go to.  Before Blyden became a convenience store manager he had a whole career in being an umpire for the NCAA.  He still umpires 5A high school games, supervises the local college umpires, refs high school football, and is currently the red hat TV time out guy at all the home BYU football games.  We always have fun talking sports with Blyden!  I go to him with all my "stupid umpire calls" questions and he ALWAYS takes the side of the stupid umpire!
Anyways, my friend Sandy is the assistant manager at Holiday and she called to see if I could decorate a cake for Blyden.  I of course said, "SURE!"  She said that she wanted it to be a baseball cake.  Something that represented him.  And this is what I came up with!  Pretty funny huh?  He kinda looks like a angry umpire!

It was fun to do and Blyden loved it!
And that's all that really matters, right?

ER visit!

Ethan got sick in early February.
He had missed several days of school.  One night several hours after he had gone to bed he came into my bedroom and looked at me with this look, and I knew that something was wrong!  He was coughing and struggling to breath!  I asked if he was wheezing, if he thought he was having an asthma attack?  He said, "No mom, this is different!  This isn't asthma!"  I wasn't sure what to do but I knew that Ethan was panicking and so I had better do something!  I asked David what he thought I should do and he said, "Just take him to the ER."  Well okay then, I guess we are going to the ER!
We got to the ER and he was still struggling.  They took us back to a room and his oxygen levels were just fine.  But his blood pressure however was out of control!  The doctor and nurse were both very upset about his blood pressure!  They probably took it 6 different times in just a few minutes!  During this time Ethan's face was tingling and going numb.  The doctor explained to me that he was hyperventilating and that he needed to slow down his breathing.  They put a mask with a bag attached to it on his face and told him to slow down his breathing!  Meanwhile the doctor got on the computer to look up all of Ethan's medical history.  She was thinking out loud while talking to the nurse about his blood pressure. It was very obvious that his blood pressure being that high was not normal and that it could potentially be something serious!  Then the nurse took his blood pressure one last time and it was normal.  He reported it to the doctor and she acted very relieved.  The weird this was, that from that time on they were no longer concerned about his blood pressure again.  Once Ethan's breathing became controlled they took him back for X-rays.  Finally they decided that he had adult croop.  They gave him a shot of steroids and sent him on his way.

He seemed to improve over the next few days and then he got worse.  I couldn't help worrying about his blood pressure though!  I just felt like it was so odd that it was so high so many times and then all of a sudden came down to normal.  I of course read everything I could on line about high blood pressure and that even gave me more reason to worry.  I ended up taking him into his regular doctor, talking to him about our experience, and getting him on some more medication.  He assured me that the high blood pressure readings they had gotten were just false readings.  Most likely because of his stress and panic, it was causing the false read.  I don't know, I still think it was kinda weird!  Anyways, Ethan continued to cough for the next 3 months!  I personally think that he probably really had whooping cough.  I heard of several people being diagnosed with whooping cough around that time and I think it was going around.

But Ethan eventually made a full recovery and he is doing great now!

Grandma loves the snow!

Grandma sure gets giddy about the snow!
I think it brings back fawned childhood memories.

 She likes to shovel it!

She likes to play in it!

She even likes to eat it!

Now the playing in it is probably for the Grand children's sake!  She likes to entertain them whenever she can!  They are always asking her questions about her childhood and then daring her to do what she said she once did.  She's a good sport!  And who knows, maybe she really likes going out in the snow to make snow angels!  I hear it's pretty fun!

Snowboarding!

We only made it to the mountain one time this last winter for Carsten to snowboard!  We picked up Carsten's friend Dylan and headed to Sundance.  We got there and Carsten realized that he had forgotten to bring his gloves.  But he acted all cool like he didn't need them anyways because he had no intention of falling down!  Alright, whatever!  They took off up the ski lift and we waited at the bottom for them.  It seemed like it took forever for them to come back down the mountain!  And then finally we saw them.  Carsten was struggling to stay up and he looked absolutely miserable!  He finally made it down to us and he was crying!  His hands were bright red and hurting something awful!  I felt bad for him!  I did all I could to warm his hands up and then headed to the ski shop.  $35.00 later he had himself a nice new pair of ski gloves!  The boys headed back up the mountain and from then on out they had a lot less falls!  We just don't go snowboarding enough around here.  It takes a run or two to get the hang of it again!

Bradon got his pump!

This is a really BIG DEAL!
Bradon finally got his insulin pump!
No more shots every time he puts something in his mouth!

It SUCKS to be a T1D (Type 1 diabetic),
but it will suck a little bit less with a pump!

Congratulations Bradon!
I'm so happy for you!

ROCK WALL!

First of all you will have to excuse the low quality pictures.
I took these with my phone camera.

David took his young men's to Trafalga fun center.
I went along with the little one's just for fun.
Talan hadn't ever been rock wall climbing before!
He was a little uncertain at first.  The guy that worked there was super nice to him.  He climbed up the wall right next to him to help him figure out where to put his feet and stuff.  Talan would only go up so high and then sorta freak out and be done.

Reagan however was a beast!  She had no trouble making it to the top!

 Carsten had no troubles either!

Hey mom look at me, I'm climbing!

Talan would come down and then a little while later he would want to try it again.  You could see his determination!  Brother Budge tried helping him.  Actually everyone was trying to help him!  Everyone was rooting for Talan!  But he would chicken out every time he got sorta high up!  We told him that it was okay, he didn't need to reach the top, but you could tell that he really wanted to.  By the time it was time to go home he got super close!  He was just a couple more steps to the top and then he came down.

Well the next morning, in his same exact outfit (because he slept in them) he insisted that he wanted to go back to try it again!
I took him back as soon as they were open and he climbed to the top!

Way to go champ!

Talan turns 5!

Yo Ho Ho!
It's Talan's Birthday!

Before Talan's birthday I asked him what kind of birthday party he wanted to have.  He started off wanting a TMNT birthday (Ninja Turtles).  Then it changes to various different super heroes and then finally I took him to the party store.  He saw some pirate stuff and that was it!
For Talan's birthday we had a pirate party!
We invited some of his cute little friends
and he was as excited as could be!

I made a treasure map and sent the kids
on a treasure hunt for loot and gold!

My mom read the kids a pirate story!

 And then we opened presents.
This cute poster is from the Payne family.
They moved to Texas and we miss them so much!

My favorite part about opening presents is that I have the birthday boy give a hug to whoever gave him the gift.  It's always a big hit!  Each kid at the party makes sure to get their hug!

We sang happy birthday and blew out the candles!

And Yo Ho Ho a birthday party it was!

After the party it was time for
Grandma and Grandpa Haws to go back to Arizona.
It was so much fun having them in town!

I love my Mom and Dad so much!
I couldn't have been more blessed when getting parents!

Grandma loves to play mess with Talan!
And Talan loves to be messed with!

Look how tall Ethan is getting!

I don't know where Reagan was but I didn't happen to get any pictures of her.  I do love how all these pictures show the kids personality though!

Happy Birthday Talan!
And Goodbye Mom and Dad!
